Introduction

This page presents a selection of current news items and informative links that report climate and weather related stories of various kinds. The events and trends in these stories are both an indicator of the impact of already occurring shifts in climate patterns and of the dangers future changes may bring.

These stories highlight the actual and potential reality of climate change. It does and will have an impact on people's health, food and livelihood as well as plants and animals. Not all the stories listed here report events necessarily linked directly by the "enhanced greenhouse effect" that is caused by human activity. However, as the international scientific panel on climate research (IPCC) has repeatedly pointed out, some of the existing trends (such as melting glaciers, desertification, migration of species) can be linked to climate alterations and future change is likely to exacerbate them.

Climate change is happening and we will have to live with it, but it is up to us to decide on how severe it is going to be in the long-term future. The intention of this page is to raise awareness by providing information on the current trends and signals and highlight the risks incurred by inaction.

Science

The Intergovernmental Panel on CLimate Change (IPCC), the UN appointed forum of hundreds of scientists from all parts of the world, released its lates and Third Assessment Report (TAR) on the status of scientic findings in climate research in 2001.

The reports are available online and the statements below on the current consensus (!) on what are regarded as current facts on climate change are direct quotes from the IPCC reports. From "Climate Change 2001: The Scientific Basis - Summary for Policymakers"
