Climate
Change touches upon
just every aspect of contemporary life from transport
to heating
to diet. As one report noted 'Every time we turn on the gas or electric heater,
we are directly
or indirectly burning fossil fuels and releasing greenhouse gases, particularly
CO2.'
Every time we travel by car we release CO2 from the petrol or diesel burned
in the engine, as
well as gases that produce low level ozone, another greenhouse gas. When we
eat meat or rice,
we indirectly contribute to the production of methane from belching cows, other
animals and from
rice paddies. When we buy food and other organic material such as paper, it
decays in rubbish
tips to produce methane. When we buy fridges they might use CFCs, which as well
as being
ozone-depleting chemicals are also potential greenhouse gases. This makes the
problem at
simultanesously a very daunting one to address but also leaves scope for action
in every part of life.
