2011 Climate Change Performance Index

For the sixth time, the index compares the climate change performances of the 57 highest CO2-emitting countries. Together, they are responsible for more than 90 percent of global energy emissions.

The Climate Change Performance Index aims to enhance transparency on national and international efforts to avoid dangerous climate change. On the one hand, this tool shows who is doing what regarding climate change. On the other hand, it provides more information about the strengths and weaknesses of the different countries in the various sectors.

EU member states traditionally performed well in the index, most of them being in the CCPI 2011's top 20. This year countries like Sweden, Germany, Malta, Hungary, Slovakia and Ireland either held on to their top 20 positions from last year or moved higher in the rankings. However, several top 20 EU countries such as UK, France, Portugal, Latvia and Belgium dropped in the rankings.

Hungary, which will hold the EU presidency in the first semester of 2011, also rose in the rankings this year, while Poland, which will hold the EU Presidency right after Hungary and during the climate summit in South Africa next year, fell.
