A new year, a new Commission

January 2010 started with a bang as the European Parliament grilled the newly designated candidates for the European Commission to ensure they are up to the tasks they will be taking on for the next five years.

The key interviews relative to CAN Europe's work started well with Janez Potocnik of Slovenia, who formerly served as head of DG Research and received high marks for his performance during his Parliamentary interview to become the new Environment Commissioner. This new Commission is an especially exciting prospect for CAN Europe as we now have our first ever European Climate Action Commissioner in the form of Connie Hedegaard, who served as Climate and Energy Minister for Denmark for several years during the runup to the Copenhagen climate summit. Check back here for more information as we prepare to engage with the new Directorate General for Climate in the weeks ahead.
