“Climate Week” on the International Stage: UN High-Level session and Bush's Major Emitters meeting. The week of 24 – 28 September has been dubbed “Climate Week” by many, in recognition of the multitude of events at the international stage regarding addressing climate change.
24 September. UN Secretary Ban Ki Moon held a special High-Level session in which over 80 heads of state and high-level representatives from at least 70 additional countries will be making statements on climate change in one of four thematic areas: adaptation, mitigation, technology, and financing. The aim of the Secretary is to build momentum for the upcoming UN climate change talks to be held in Bali in December.
Later this week, on Thursday and Friday, President Bush and Secretary of State Rice will host a meeting of 16 “Major Economies” to discuss a process to address climate change. Many environmental groups have criticized the convening of the meeting as well as its content, citing it as an attempt by the Bush administration to derail the UN process and pointing out that many of the countries most vulnerable to climate change will not have a voice at Bush’s conference. In addition, environmental groups have called on the administration to agree to mandatory limits on reductions, noting that voluntary measures will not achieve the reductions needed to avoid dangerous climate change.
